Our history
How a small distributor of used mobiles became a trusted digital device lifecycle ecosystem partner for global insurers, banks, retailers and telecoms operators
Digital device pioneers
Bamboo’s story began long before the company took its current shape. As early as 1999, our founders were among the first UK businesses to distribute used mobile phones — long before the circular economy became a recognised industry model.
Those early years shaped our belief that devices should be kept in use for as long as possible, for the benefit of both customers and the planet.
What began as a small, specialist distributor in Waltham Abbey gradually grew into a business trusted for reliability, honesty and high-quality device handling.
Our evolution has always followed a clear principle: listen to clients, respond to their needs and innovate together. As banks, insurers, telecoms operators and retailers look for partners who could do more than supply stock, we expanded in direct response.
The way Bamboo Connect operates today, with sustainability and agility at its core, continues to shape how we grow. Every new service we’ve introduced reflects a real-world client challenge and created a stronger, more sustainable model.

A timeline of transformation
Throughout its history, Bamboo Connect has strengthened how it supports the digital device lifecycle, from start to finish.
Here are some of the key milestones in our service evolution:
2009: Device fulfilment for insurance partners
2011: Buying and selling second-hand devices; launch of buy-back schemes
2013: Salvage management services
2014: Consultancy services; expansion across multiple UK insurer programmes
2015: Consumer and enterprise trade-in programmes
2019: Swap-scheme solutions and multi-category refurbishment (mobiles, tablets, laptops, wearables, hearables, screens)
2024: Full lifecycle ecosystem, covering procurement, fulfilment, logistics, repair, refurbishment, trade-in and certified recycling — with millions of devices processed cumulatively across all categories
2025: King’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade, adding to our Queen’s Award from 2018
Evolving digital device sustainability
Long before we published our first Sustainability Impact Report in 2025, sustainability was already deeply embedded in how we operate. We have consistently invested in:
• circular recovery and reuse
• structured refurbishment and repair
• responsible recycling
• European-based processing to reduce emissions
• measurable CO₂ savings and e-waste diversion
• supplier engagement and ethical standards across the chain.
Each milestone represents a genuine client need and a step towards a stronger, more sustainable circular economy.
The King’s Award recognises Bamboo Connect’s exceptional international growth and ability to scale sustainable lifecycle solutions globally
Growth milestone: Rubicon investment
A pivotal moment in our growth story came in 2021 when Rubicon Partners acquired a majority share in Bamboo Connect, recognising our ongoing capacity for growth and supporting the next stage of our expansion.
Rubicon has brought financial strength, sector expertise and a global perspective, positioning our platform for growth across Europe and beyond. The investment reinforces long-term stability for colleagues and clients, while giving Bamboo Connect access to new opportunities, markets and technologies.
The original leadership team remains in place, supported by a 12-strong senior management group and a growing workforce of more than 110 members of staff.
Rebranding to Bamboo Connect
In 2025, Bamboo Distribution became Bamboo Connect. The new name reflects the expansion of our service offering that goes way beyond just distributing devices — we now connect procurement, fulfilment, repair, refurbishment, trade-in, logistics, data and sustainability into one seamless, tech-enabled ecosystem.
The ecosystem is backed by our proprietary OptimaAI SaaS platform, which orchestrates entire device journeys and provides real-time visibility, auditability and quality control. The rebrand marks a future-proof shift to a broader, deeper and fully integrated service model.

Looking ahead: device lifecycle innovation
Bamboo Connect’s evolution from a pioneering distributor to a trusted lifecycle ecosystem partner has been shaped by steady growth, client collaboration and relentless innovation.
The next phase of our journey is shaped by research, engineering and forward-looking development. At the centre of this is the Bamboo Lab — our clean-room test and innovation facility where partners can see how we validate every process and where new ideas take shape.
This investment in innovation ensures Bamboo Connect remains a leader in lifecycle excellence — expanding what is possible in reuse, reducing environmental impact and setting new standards for banks, insurers, telecoms operators and retailers.
With strong foundations, a clear vision and a commitment to an even more sustainable future, the most exciting chapters in our history are yet to come.
